Faced with the increasing dissemination of false, misleading, or out-of-context information, fact-checking appears as a powerful journalistic mechanism to guarantee veracity. Different fact-checking projects will meet at the III Global Summit on Disinformation (September 27 and 28) with the aim of sharing their experiences and their commitments to transparency: Media and news organizations will bring successful strategies for the public to access verified information.
Born after the explosion of disinformation on social networks, the fact-checking movement as a type of journalism is expanding throughout the world and setting up networks to fight against disinformation.
To promote excellence in data verification, many projects respond to the code of principles developed in 2016 by the International Fact Checking Network (IFCN). These include a commitment to nonpartisanship and fairness, a commitment to source transparency, a commitment to funding and organizational transparency, a commitment to methodology transparency, and a commitment to open and honest corrections.
During the III Global Summit, some of these specialized media will tell what processes they use to guarantee the distribution of verified content. Members of the IFCN -the organization that grants certification to verifiers- will be part of the panel of exhibitors. Jesús Vargas, a member of Bolivia Verifica, and Héctor Rodríguez Cárdenas, a university professor and coordinator of Medianalisis (Venezuela) will also participate.
Likewise, there will be a Round of Fact-Checking Projects: more than 30 proposals are being analyzed to participate in the III Summit. The round will be in charge of Bolivia Verifica and Infoveritas (Spain).
The III Global Summit on Disinformation is organized by the Inter-American Press Association, the Foundation for Journalism (Bolivia) and Proyecto Desconfío (Argentina).
The event has the support of the Google News Initiative, the International Fact-Checking Network, the United States Embassy in Argentina, the United Nations Argentina, and BancoSol of Bolivia.
